Senate To Speedily Pass Anti-Jungle Justice Bills — Saraki

Anti-Jungle Justice Bills — SarakiSenate President, Bukola Saraki, has promised the speedy passage of the Anti-hate speech and the Anti- Jungle Justice bill, once the House resumes plenary in September. Saraki made the promise in a statement released by his media aide Yusuf Olaniyonu. Read the statement below:

As the 8th Senate lays out its agenda for the next 22-months, President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has highlighted that due to the rising tensions in the polity, the passage of Bills to mitigate against hate speech and jungle justice will comprise a major part of the Senate’s social impact agenda when it resumes in September.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki stated that the Senate is ready to give the Hate Speech Bill accelerated consideration when it is presented by the Executive.

“At this point in time, when people are heating up the political and social space with their utterances, the Hate Speech Bill will help to mitigate against verbal attacks or expressions against individuals or groups on the basis of ethnicity, religion, and even gender.

“This will help to send a clear message with accompanying punitive measures to those negative elements in our society that are fond of distasteful comments that hurt, offend and provoke retaliation,” the President of the Senate said.

Saraki also stated that the Anti-Jungle Justice Bill (SB. 109), which is sponsored by Senator Dino Melaye, (APC-Kogi), will also help to curtail, protect and prohibit Nigerians across the country from meting out extra-judicial justice to perceived offenders without recourse to statutory legal channels.

“There have been many cases of extrajudicial executions across the nation. We all remember the “Aluu Four” incident, and several other notorious cases of phone and food thieves being set ablaze. We cannot have a situation where people feel that they can take the law into their hands,” Saraki said, “Therefore, we must put in place careful stopgaps and penal measures to protect the sanctity of our communities.”

The Senate President also stated that the Committee on Judiciary and the Rules and Business Committees of the Senate would work to ensure that Anti-Jungle Justice Bill is quickly passed and sent to the House of Representatives for concurrence.

THE Anambra State Police Command has invited Chief Aloysius Ikegwuonu, who suspected assailants were said to be looking for when they attacked St Philip’s Catholic Church, Amakwa Ozubulu penultimate Sunday.

Ikegwuonu’s father was among the 13 people who lost their lives during the attack in which nearly 30 people were wounded. Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in Anambra State, Mrs. Nkiru Nwode, said, yesterday, that Ikegwuonu, popularly called ‘Bishop’, is expected to appear at the police headquarters in Awka on Friday.

Ikegwuonu, who left the state before the attack on the church he built for his community, was said to have returned to the state last Saturday and attended the first Mass at St Philip’s on Sunday. He declined to speak to anybody after the church service in which the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, SSG, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, also attended as part of a ceremony to reopen the church.

Nwode said the invitation to Ikegwuonu could not be taken to mean arrest, adding that the police had no reason to arrest him.

This came as Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, yesterday, set up a 10-man Ozubulu Casualty Charity Fund Committee to handle the welfare of the victims of the attack. Meanwhile, 44 victims of the attack were, yesterday, given N50,000 each at various hospitals they were admitted including Nnewi, Ozubulu and Oba, by the diocese to alleviate their problems .

Members of the committee are Monsignor Patrick Ezeobata, chairman; Rev Fr Jude Onwuaso; Rev Fr Donald Chukwudolue; Rev Fr Joe Onyema; Fr Cajetan Obodozie; Brother Cyprian Oneni; Sister Theresa Martin; Mrs Juliana Arazu; Mrs Uju Azuka and Dr Sylvester Igwilo. Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev Hilary Odili Okeke, said the committee would visit all the victims in different hospitals to know their needs with a view to offering a helping hand to all of them.

Okeke disclosed that the committee has the mandate to ensure that every help provided by groups and individuals to the victims would be deposited into a central account called Ozubulu Casualty Charity Fund provided by the committee.

He said: “Many people and groups in the church are helping the victims. The state government has promised to pay into that account. These people eat and that is why we give them money. The families of the dead will not be forgotten and the committee was also charged to be accountable in the discharge of its duties.” Reacting to Ozubulu Youths Association, OYA, protest  over the reopening of the church for service, while investigation is still being conducted, Bishop Okeke queried whether the protesters were Christians at all.

Power outage: Residents performs ritual on IBEDC premises in Osun State
Residents performs ritual on IBEDC premisesResidents performs ritual on IBEDC premises

Residents of Ijebu-Jesa, the headquarters of the Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State, on Tuesday trooped out to protest against the power outage in some parts of the community for one year.

Armed with placards with various inscriptions, the residents stormed the office of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company in the town to register their complaints.

Some protesters also carried ritual materials in a clay pot, which they placed at the entrance of the IBEDC’s office.

It was learnt that the officials of the company fled on hearing that the protesters were coming to the office.

The protesters said life had become difficult for them as a result of the prolonged outage, adding that businesses had collapsed and social activities paralysed.

One of the members of the affected community, Venerable Julius Fakunle of Ijesa-North Anglican Diocese, Ijebu-Jesa, said residents started experiencing poor supply of electricity from 2015, adding that the situation degenerated into a total blackout in August 2016.

Although the venerable did not follow the protesters to the IBEDC office, he said residents decided to register their displeasure because the company was not doing enough to address the problem.

He said, “We arranged to repair the damaged transformer. After the first effort failed, we came to the IBEDC office in Ijebu-Jesa and they recommended another contractor whom they said repaired a transformer in Kajola, which is still working.

“We paid N600,000 to the contractor and up till now, they have been deceiving us. So, we came back to our community and had a meeting to know the next step to take. We have engaged people to talk to our political office holders, but no response till date.

“The IBEDC later disconnected us and restored electricity to some areas such as Oba’s Palace and filling stations where they can generate more money.

“We went to the Oba-in-Council to complain and the council gave us a chief, who went with us to the IBEDC to lodge our complaints.

“We later discovered that no complaint was lodged by the IBEDC, Ijebu-Jesa, to their office in Ibadan (Oyo State) and they kept raising our hope.”

The spokesperson for the IBEDC, Kikelomo Owoeye, told newsmen that the company was working to address the problem, urging the residents to exercise more patience.

She said, “There are 18 transformers in Ijebu-Jesa and just one of them is faulty. We have held meetings with the residents and they took a letter to our office in Ibadan on the issue.

“Their issue is on the front burner and the transformer will be replaced anytime we have a new one. But we will appeal to them not to assault our officials because that will not solve the issue at hand.”

Moto G5S Plus Smartphone

Design and Display

The Moto G5S Plus flaunts a more robust build, compared to the G5 Plus released few months ago. It no longer uses a plastic chassis with metallic coating, but parades a full metal unibody design. This makes it feel more premium and durable. Like in the G5S,  the Moto G5S Plus enjoys splash protection.

Its display is also bigger, bumped from 5.2 inches to 5.5 inches. That’s more screen estate for content viewing. Boasting Full HD resolution, this touchscreen is comparable to that seen on the Moto Z2 Play.

Camera

The Moto G5S Plus doesn’t offer the upgraded 16MP primary camera of the new G5s. Instead, you get a pair of 13MP sensors on the back for higher quality images. This is the only the second Motorola device to offer dual rear shooters, after Moto Z2 Force. The device features dual LED flash and promises stunning 4K videos.

You also get an improved selfie shooter. The resolution is now improved to 8 megapixels, from 5 megapixels. The camera also offers flash for good shots in poorly-lit settings.

Hardware and Software

Just like the Moto G5 Plus, the Moto G5S Plus comes with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. This runs at speeds up to 2.0 GHz and pairs with similar 3GB RAM as its smaller brother. Onboard storage is the same at 32 GB and this is also expandable. The Moto G5S Plus runs on Android 7.1 Nougat software that seems to promise experience similar to what the Google Pixel offers.

Other Specs and Features

Likewise, the Moto G5S Plus packs a higher capacity 3,000mAh Li-Ion battery, which receives support from TurboPower fast charge technology. Moto G5S Plus features a fingerprint sensor at the base of the display, inserted into the Home button. It is available in both single and dual SIM variants. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.1 and dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n with Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot.
