Governor Nasir el-Rufai wishes the oil wells and the ‘free money’ there from dry up so that the government and the people can get serious about making the country realize its full potentials.
el-Rufai spoke yesterday in Ibadan at the 2017 Town Hall Meeting/ Founder’s Day Celebration in memory of renowned economist, Professor Ojetunji Aboyade.
He also made a fresh case for state policing, and warned against allowing the federal character policy become an enemy of merit in appointments.
The governor who was the special guest of honour at the event said: “Because Nigeria gets easy money from oil, the nation has lost its thinking initiative on how to develop other sources of revenue and diversify the economy.
“We get easy money, we do not collect taxes and our taxes are six per cent of Gross Domestic Product; that is an average of 21per cent. We stop respecting the intellectuals that we have in our universities because we get easy money.
“This is very sad, I wish the oil will dry up so that we can begin to use our brains because we have stopped using our brains and we have stopped respecting intellects because of easy money.
On policing, he said: “It is obvious that Nigeria is severely under-policed, and will require more personnel, intelligence assets, better training, technology and equipment for its security agencies for the country to be a credible guarantor of security.
“Even if these were to be available, it is also debatable whether a single centralised policing system, structure and staffing for 200 million citizens is viable in a diverse, multi-lingual, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic nation like Nigeria.”
He also addressed the issue of federal character, saying: “To complement the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals, we must have discourse around the imperative of a project dedicated to enabling equal opportunity so that the circumstances of a citizen’s birth don’t prescribe his or her ceiling in life.
“How can we promote a national subscription to meritocracy? How can we ensure that the imperative of reflecting federal character does not become the enemy of merit and quality of appointments? Today, we don’t plan. We don’t have national plan and if we don’t plan, we are planning to fail.
“Having suffered brain drain, how do we attract back our Diaspora and the brain-gain associated with it like the Chinese and Indians have witnessed? These are the questions a distributive mentality around easy oil revenues is dodging.
“The earlier the oil dries up the better for our national ability to think, be innovative and respect intellect and academic achievement.
el-Rufai spoke on “Public Policy research should promote national consensus.”
In his presentation, the lead speaker, Professor Sam Olofin, explained that indeed the country is technically out of recession but that it requires sustained efforts for an economy to be progressive.
He noted that many Nigerians are confusing the country’s underdevelopment with recession adding that with the reversal of the growing negative rate of the economy, the country is technically out of recession but that the positive growth must also be sustained and continuous so that it would rub on the overall economy.
He stressed that if Nigeria doesn’t diversify its dependence on oil early enough, the country will remain an underdeveloped economy for a long time.
Chairman of the occasion, Professor Oladipupo Akinkugbe, said Nigeria keeps chasing potential but that the country will have to get there fast and as early as possible.
He lamented that many of the excellent ideas churned out by many research institutes are often allowed to gather dust. He said that if some of the ideas and recommendations made by many researchers over the years had been implemented, the country would not be where it is today.
The event which had the theme “Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria,” was organised by the Development Policy Centre, Ibadan.

Three men are being held by the police in Akure, Ondo State capital for the murder of three female students of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo town for money ritual.
John Adenitire, aka Emir, Fasayo Fasanu, aka Abore and Alfa Abdulrafiu Tijani, a herbalist, claimed they killed the students and removed their left breasts and hands after they were promised N5million for each of the breasts and hands by suspected ritualists.
They confessed to have subsequently buried the remains of their victims in the thick forest.
Meanwhile, the suspects said they had delivered the breasts and hands to the man who linked them to the ritualists but were yet to be paid for the job when they were arrested by the police. The middleman, identified as Sile, now at large, has been declared wanted by the police while the composing bodies of two of the victims, Blessing Oladepo and Mary Oluwasemilore, have been recovered by detectives from the shallow graves where they were buried in the forest.
Sile’s clients, it was learnt, had their base in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State. First to be arrested was Adenitiri who led police detectives to other suspects and where the decomposing bodies of two of the three students were recovered. The place of the burial of the third victim, whose name was not disclosed, was yet to be ascertained by detectives.
Sources said the three students began their ill-fated journey when they left their rented apartments outside the Adeyemi College of Education campus for an unknown destination. After they left home, the victims were said to have been carried on motorbike by Adenitire and Fasanu who posed as Okada riders. At that point, the three girls were believed to have been hypnotised, diverted from their destination and taken to the forest where they were killed.
Tijani, according to sources, was the person who received the breasts and hands removed from the girls bodies and, in turn, gave them to Sile before the middleman disappeared without paying the promised N15million.
The sources said the disappearance of the victims was not reported to the college authorities until about one week after they had been missing by neighbours and a report was lodged with the police. The matter was then assigned to the anti- robbery squad of the state police command which burst the syndicate. Narrating how the three students met their cruel fate, one of the suspects, Adenitire, said the money attached to job attracted them to kidnapping the girls and killing them.
N15million for three hands and three breasts, according to him, were too tempting to resist. He said that after they killed the girls, they handed over the body parts to Tijani, who he described as the herbalist, who, in turn, transported them to Sile now at large. “They promised to give us N5 million for a left breast and a left hand and we were able to send three different sets to them but they had not sent the money before the police nabbed us,” the suspect said.
“We killed the three girls and removed their breasts and buried their remains in the forest. We gave the parts to the Alfa and Sile who is also part of us but took to his heels after our arrest. “I was not there when the victims were killed but I was the one keeping vigil at the entrance of the forest and the operation was successful.
I did not participate in the killing.” The second suspect, Fasanu, said, “I was in my house when John Adenitire told me he had a business that could lead to cool money for us. He told me it was about ritual and assured me there was no problem. “We went out the second day around 9:30 p.m. and three girls and one boy were picked and we killed them before removing their parts while Sile took them to herbalists in Ore and Ijebu Igbo.”
Ondo State Police Commissioner Gbenga Adeyanju, while parading the suspects alongside 15 other suspected armed robbers and cult members, said the suspects had been engaged in the crime for a while and had extended their activities to neighbouring states. Adeyanju said the suspects were arrested at different locations and had confessed to killing the three students. According to him, a report on a missing girls were made at Fagun Police Station, Ondo town on July 28, saying the report triggered police investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects.
Adenitire, the police commissioner hinted, was arrested in a robbery incident in Ondo, and later confessed to the kidnapping and killing of the missing girls for ritual. He said further investigation led to the discovery of the bodies of two of the female students, disclosing that Adenitire’s confession also led to the arrest of the two other suspects who participated in the killing.
According to the police boss, Adenitire and Fasanu specifically confessed to selling the breasts and hands of the ladies to Tijani in Ore, who promised to pay N15 million. Adeyanju said, “During interrogation, the suspects confessed to mutilating the bodies of the victims for ritual purposes. In fact, the suspects took us to where they buried the victims.
On getting there, we found the bodies already decomposing” He said that the suspects would be charged to court for murder after police investigation. The police boss declared total war on criminals in the state just as he solicited the cooperation of the people of Ondo for information to the police in their bid to rid the state of crime and criminality.

Governors from the northern states of the country who are members of the All Progressives Congress on Saturday said nothing would stop President Muhammadu Buhari from contesting the 2019 election.
Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, a close ally of the President, also backed Buhari for a second term.
They spoke just as the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, said on Twitter on Saturday that, “We’re working on Buhari’s return to power in 2019.”
The development came barely 48 hours after the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, vowed to ensure the realisation of the presidential ambition of a former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, instead of Buhari in 2019.
She had said, “If am to choose between Atiku and Buhari if both contest the forthcoming 2019 presidential election, I will support Atiku.”
Her declaration made the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to declare in an interview with State House correspondents that APC governors and ministers would support Buhari’s re-election in 2019.
El-Rufai said Alhassan did not believe in President Buhari’s political ideology and that she voted against the President during the APC presidential primary.
The Northern Governors Forum made its position known through the Deputy Chairman of the group, Abdullahi Ganduje.
Ganduje, who is also the Governor of Kano State, said the support for Buhari was total and unconditional and that in case the President decided to seek re-election in 2019, Nigerians across the six geo-political zones would troop out to re-elect him.
The governor spoke through his Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr. Muhammed Garba.
He explained that Buhari’s support base had increased over the last two years because of the transparent manner he has been handling the nation’s economy and his administration’s war against corruption and insecurity.
He said the foundation laid by the current administration would be consolidated and improved upon should the President decide to offer his services to the nation again in 2019.
Mohammed said, “The Buhari brand is a unifying factor because Nigerians across ethno-religious divides have come to see him as a man who walks the talk.
“For us in Kano for example, our support for him is 100 per cent. We know him as an honest Nigerian who thinks Nigeria first before anything else.
“His performance over the last two years — especially in the war against corruption, insecurity and terrorism — has been exemplary.
“Should he decide to hear our cry to seek re-election, we will not only support him but also do everything humanly and legally possible to ensure his victory.
“For those who have the privilege of travelling outside Nigeria, it is common knowledge that we are now respected because of the value the Buhari administration has brought to governance.”
In the same vein, Amosun, who spoke to journalists on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at a book launch, said the President has the right to a second term.
He said, “The only thing that can prevent President Buhari from contesting is if his health cannot take it.
“If not for this present administration, only God knows where Nigeria would have been. When the government came on board, it was like jumping into the pool at the deep end.”
He scored the Federal Government high in its fight against insurgency, insecurity, corruption as well as efforts geared at economic recovery through serious diversification drive.
Similarly, the Arewa Consultative Forum has said it will support Buhari in the 2019 presidential poll.
The socio-cultural group, however, gave a condition.
“If President Muhammadu Buhari is able to deliver on his campaign promises substantially and be as fit as a fiddle to undertake presidential responsibilities and tasks by the end of his tenure, there will be no reason not to support him,” the ACF Secretary General, Anthony Sani, said.

The Oyo State Police Command said on Saturday that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the clash that occurred between two factional groups of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), on Thursday, DAILY POST reports.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Adekunle Ajisebutu in a short telephone conversation with newsmen in Ibadan, said that though investigation to unravel the causes of the clash is still ongoing, two suspects have been arrested.
Ajisebutu who said that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has swung into action to investigate the root cause of the matter and brought perpetrators into book also confirmed that one person who was gunned down during the melee Thursday evening has died.
The Police spokesperson who did not reveal the identity of the arrested suspects said they are still in the investigation department for further interrogation and investigation.
Victim of Ibadan OPC clash, victim, Adesina AkinpeluHe said, “Yes, there was a clash on Thursday between OPC members. We have arrested two people in connection with the clash.
“The CID is investigating the matter, two people have been arrested. We have arrested two people and the CID is still investigating the matter”.
It was earler reported on Friday that two factions of OPC, one led by Otunba Gani Adams and the other, OPC New Era clashed at the Lekan Salami Stadium Adamasingba where a summit of Yoruba christened “Ibadan Declaration” titled “Yoruba Standpoint on Restructuring” was held.
The clash led to the death of one person who is said to belong to Gani Adams group while many others including a strong member of the OPC New Era Group, Mr. Adesina Akinpelu were seriously injured.
A golf car with registration number JJJ 784 AS was damaged during the franca.
Akinpelu who was said to have been injured with several weapons such as guns, cutlasses, stones and sticks was later taken to Police Hospital, Eleyele where he has been receiving treatment since then.
It was gathered that it took the intervention of the DPO of Mokola Police station and other security men who intervened to save Akinpelu’s life and ensure that the clash did not escalate.
Akinpelu while speaking with journalists on his hospital bed however fingered Gani Adams for his ordeal.
He alleged that Gani Adams allegedly instructed his squad to kill him (Akinpelu) who is the arrow head of the struggle to remove Gani Adams as leader of the group for a very long time .
Akinpelu disclosed that he was on his way to disburse money for some of their members who traveled to Ibadan for the event when he was attacked ,adding that the sum of four hundred and thirty thousand, (430,000) naira was stolen from him by the attackers.
He stated that it was the timely intervention of men of the Nigeria police that saved him from been killed while stating that the squad was led by the duo of one Top Terror and one Sunday Babalola who led the team that attacked him.
“I was coming out to sort out the transport fares of our members who traveled to Ibadan for the program and as I approached the gate three of the stadium, Gani’s alleged killer squad had destroyed one of our vehicles.
“I was examining the damage when Sunday Babalola pointed at me and the boys rushed to attack me”.
However, efforts to get the reaction of Gani Adams as at the time of filling this report have proved abortive.
Calls put through to the mobile phone of his (Gani Adams) Personal Assistant, Mr. Segun Olalekan Akanni by newsmen Saturday afternoon to react to the allegations were not answered.

His Royal Highness, Isaac Okwu Kanu said the recent move by the Federal Government to get his son re-arrested, warning that it would spell doom for the country.
Speaking with the Sun, Kanu, who doubles as the traditional ruler of Afara Ukwu Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government area of Abia State also sent an SOS to the United Nations, alleging that the Federal Government planned to kill his son.
“Yes, of course, I’m a human being. When they talk of re-arresting him, it means they want to kill him, but God will not allow them because my son has done nothing wrong. I am using this opportunity to call on the United Nations to call the Nigerian government to order because they are planning to kill my son. My son did not do anything; government should go after those who have committed offence against Nigeria.
He said. “Why will they want to re-arrest him? Did he kill anybody? Did he flout the constitution? Some people are saying that my son, flouted the bail condition given him by a Federal High Court in Abuja, but the question remains, what type of bail condition was that? Is it possible that a person of my son’s standing in the society could stay without meeting up to 10 persons in a day or week?
“So, the said bail condition was against his fundamental human rights. But that not withstanding, I know what we are passing through in my palace; trying to stop people from coming here, but there is a limit to which we can do that. Initially, the major gate to my palace had always been open, but since he came back, that gate has always been shut and we did that to stop people from gaining access to the compound. So, I don’t know what they are talking about.”
Asked what will happen if his son is rearrested, the monarch said, “Yes, re-arresting my son will definitely cause more problems for the country. Why would they re-arrest my son; to kill him? God and our people will not allow that to happen. They should realise that Nnamdi has a boy he has not set his eyes on since he was born and it was out of respect for the laws of the land that made him not to go to London to see that boy.”
