Samsung Galaxy Watch Specs, Price, and Release date
Samsung Galaxy Watch

The past week has been quite a busy one for Samsung as the South Korean electronics and gadget giant has embarked on an unveiling spree of new products; the latest being the Samsung Galaxy Watch — the new flagship off its wearable line of products. Other products that were unveiled include the Galaxy Home AI speaker, the Galaxy Tab S4, and the Galaxy Note 9.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

While the last notable wearables from Samsung were the Gear S3 released in November 2016, and the Gear Sport (2017), Samsung has decided to steer towards a totally new direction and drop the ‘Gear’ codename from its smartwatch line of product and adopt the renowned ‘Galaxy’ branding. Hence, the release of the Samsung Galaxy Watch, and not ‘Gear S4’ as many had expected and previously predicted.

With the Galaxy Watch, Samsung is looking to re-enter and (maybe) dominate the smartwatch market in grand style. But with top-of-the-line smartwatches from rival brands like Apple, Xiaomi, Huawei etc., will the features of the Galaxy Watch compete effectively? Does it cut the mustard? I guess time will be the judge of that.

Samsung Galaxy Watch: Design

Generally, the aesthetical property of the Samsung Galaxy Watch is similar to its predecessor, the Gear S3. The only difference, which might take quite much time to notice, is that the dial designs have a more analog-y appearance.

About the display, a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 360 x 360 resolution is in place. While one might wonder why Samsung chose to adopt the same display hardware used on the Gear S3 of 2016, you can’t but admit that display is a good one. Surrounding the display is a rotating bezel for navigation and switching between apps.

The Galaxy Watch sports the Gorilla Glass DX+ which was recently announced by Corning for wearable devices.

The Gorilla Glass DX+ —asides improving sunlight readability by 75% and offering improved resistance against scratches, bump, knocks, and whatnot— surprisingly brings about improvements in battery life.

Variants

The Samsung Galaxy Watch comes in two variants, the first time Samsung will release a smartwatch in two types; like it mostly does with smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

The two variants are entirely differentiated by watch face size, with (the smaller) one coming in at 42mm while the other is sized 46mm. The 46mm Galaxy Watch will be available in Silver colour while the 42mm variant will launch in Rose Gold and Midnight Black colours.

All features and properties of both watches are entirely the same, save for battery capacity, RAM, and connectivity. Both variants are 5 ATM water resistant and possess military-grade (MIL-STD-810G) protection.

Hardware, Processor & OS

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Underneath the body of the Samsung Galaxy Watch is a dual-core Exynos 9110 chipset that clock up to 1.15GHz. In assistance is 1.5GB of RAM (46mm 4G model) for fluid operations and 4GB of built-in memory for data and multimedia storage. The Bluetooth (42mm) variant, however, comes with 768MB of RAM.

The Galaxy Watch will run Samsung’s native Tizen OS, but a rather improved version; the Tizen OS v4.0.

Battery

One of the highlights of the Samsung Galaxy Watch is the seven-day battery life it boasts of. The 42mm model comes with 270mAh battery while the 46mm model is almost twice the size of the smaller counterpart; 472mAh.

Perhaps to drive up sales, Samsung beat down the price of the Galaxy Watch to be about $90 cheaper than the Gear S3. And though they won’t be up for sale till August 24 in Korea, pre-order have officially begun; global shipping of the wearable will commence on September 14.

The 42mm variant of the Samsung Galaxy Watch with 768MB of RAM and Bluetooth will cost $329.99 while the bigger 46mm variant with 1.5GB RAM and 4G LTE will sell for $349.99.

Meizu 16 Specs and Price
Meizu 16

The Meizu 16 has been in the pipe for a while now with leaks and rumours flying around. The smartphone is here and guess what? It will be Meizu”s first high-end flagship to be made. It follows the recent smartphone trends when it has to do with the design unlike the Meizu 15 which was somewhat a classica piece. Meizu’s new flagship is one that has most of the boxes ticked when it has anything to do with flagship features.

Where to Buy Meizu 16

Meizu 16

Design and Display

The Meuzu 16 comes with what most of these flagships bring to the table which is an appealing glass and an 18:9 aspect ratio or something close. It has more rounded edges which makes it look a bit different. Also, it comes with a 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C port, and a speaker at the bottom while the side as the volume rocker as well as the power button. There is the much reduced bezels around the screen especially at the side to bring the display coverage to 91.18%.

Meizu retajns the mBack button that is on screen and adds an underscreen fingerprint scanner for your own use. Made with an aluminium frame that blends with the glass covering, thus the smartphone appears uniform. The dual camera is placed vertically at the upper center with the ring flash below it.

Coming to the screen, you have to give Meizu some accolades for the Super AMOLED display used in the Meizu 16. Same as the other recent flagships, the smartphone comes with a fairly large display of 6.0-inch. Regarding resolution, the display is a Full HD+ 1080 X 2160 pixels resolution with a 402 ppi pixel density.

Battery and Camera

As for the battery, there is about the same average capacity most of these smartphones have. The Meizu 16 for example ships with a 3, 010mAh battery. As it should, there is mCharge 4.0 which is Meizu’s fast charge feature for filling your battery quickly. However, you will not be enjoying wireless charge on this one.

Now for those of you interested in the optics on the smartphone, you have a capable dual camera on the back of the smartphone. It possesses a  12MP camera with f/1.8 aperture and a 20MP camera having a f/2.8 aperture. The selfie camera is a 20MP sensor which according to Meizu is nothing short of impressive.

Hardware and Software

Interestingly, the Meizu 16 comes with the kind of chipset only seen in top of the line premium smartphones  Under the hood,  there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 CPU which is paired with Adreno 630 GPU  On this, you should enjoy no lags and a smooth experience even on the most graphic intensive mobile games.

Furthermore, it packs a large 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage , although, a less speced variant has 6GB RAM working with 64GB built-in storage. It also carries a copper tube heat dessipation tube to distribute heat away from the chipset. It is however, not with the latest Android Oreo version (Android 8.0 Oreo) and a customary Flyme UI.

Considering this is the first time Meizu is featuring the high-end Qualcomm chipset it sells for just about 142, 000 Naira depending on the deal and your location.

Samsung Galaxy Home: Futuristic Smart AI Home Speaker
Samsung Galaxy Home

At an event held in New York City, United States on August 9, the South Korean electronics giants announced a new product —the Samsung Galaxy Home— to mark its debut in the artificial intelligence (AI) driven smart home assistant ecosystem. While the OEM did not fully disclose all the specifications and features of the virtual assistant —we understand that this means Samsung aims to go toe-to-toe with big names like Apple, Google, and Amazon who are already dominating the market— it may be too early to make predictions on whether the company will succeed at it…or not.

But in the meantime, let’s have a peek at some of the properties of the Samsung Galaxy Home who got hold as the official launch is anticipated.

Samsung Galaxy Home: Design

Picture this: a typical big black cauldron (pot) with a narrow opening but big base, sitted comfortably on a metal tripod. Or a pineapple with its crown attached to its bottom. Done?

Well, I don’t know what you thought about but I’m quite sure the product of your virtual imagination looks something near the object in the image below.

Samsung Galaxy HomeThe Samsung Galaxy Home smart speaker

The exact dimension of the Galaxy Home are unknown but it sort of appears to be bigger in size than the Google Home and Amazon Echo, perhaps due to the presence of the stainless steel tripod. However, as size isn’t exactly of much significance, Samsung does score extra points for the unique and elegant design and form of the smart speaker.

Samsung Galaxy Home

At the top, indicator lights coupled with a set of physical buttons are located. The body is covered in what seem to be a “texturized fabric cover” and available in Black colour (except Samsung introduces more colour variants during official launch). The legs (tripods) are rubberized at the tips to prevent them scratching off and damaging surfaces the speaker will be placed on.

Music & Audio

During launch, Samsung mentioned that the Galaxy Home will ‘make music sound even more amazing’. Audio in the Galaxy home will be powered by six speakers and a subwoofer based on the AKG Audio technology from Harman, a company Samsung acquired back in 2016 for $8 billion.

For attendants and prospective users to have first-hand audio experience of the Galaxy Home speaker, likewise, its room-filling capability, Samsung used 160 of the speakers to provide the audio during the launch event.

Samsung Galaxy Home

To handle music on the Galaxy Home, Samsung announced its long-term partnership with popular digital music service, Spotify at the announcement event. And not just only on the Galaxy Home, Spotify will be powering Music on other Samsung products henceforward.

Voice Input

Samsung Galaxy Home

As the Samsung’s native virtual assistant, Bixby will be running on the Galaxy Home, proper receipt of voice commands is paramount. This I why the device comes with eight far-field microphones for detecting and picking up voice input and commands.

On a side note, the Bixby Assistant has been updated to become even smarter, understand commands better, and follow up with conversation more smoothly. Probably still not anywhere near Google Assistant or Siri but it sure is a welcomed development.

Price and Availability

Not sure if you already picked it up from the intro that Samsung isn’t ready to release the Galaxy Home smart speaker. The announcement at the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 launch event was just to put word out on one of the many next-big-thing it in store.

However, it is certain that the smart speaker will be released in California on November 7 at the upcoming Samsung Developer Conference. And if the device isn’t released at the event, more features, specs, and information regarding release date and pricing will surely be made available.

Nevertheless, price of the Samsung Galaxy Home is expected to be in the range of $300 to $359.
