Over the years the Compact series have always found a way to be more than just a smaller model rather it has become an hybrid of its own. The release of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact high-end smartphone in this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) alongside the bigger Sony Xperia XZ2 took a detour from what we expected. The smartphone now come with a different curved design as opposed to the square design Sony smartphones are known for. The beauty of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is that it retains all the goodies in the bigger model.
Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact Key Specs and Price 5.9-inch, IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 1080 X 2160 pixels (483 ppi) Octa-core Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 845 with 4GB RAM 64GB built-in storage with support for memory card up to 400GB 19MP rear camera and 5MP front camera 4G LTE Fingerprint sensor Water and dust proof (IP68) 2, 870mAh non removable Li-ion battery Design and DisplayBeside being smaller than the Xperia XZ2, it doesn’t have a glass finish rather you have got a polycarbonate casing covered with aluminium. The smartphone might also look chubby as a result of cramming the smartphone with features present in the bigger model rather what you have here is a smartphone with solid ergonomics.
Although the bezels are not as thin as the ones in the LG V30S ThinQ or Nokia 8 Sirocco but it had been trimmed down considerably. The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact like the XZ2 still has the front facing stereo which is one of the reasons the bezel are still that much.
As a result of the reduced size the smartphone now has a much more crammed up pixels as it still retains the same resolution as in the Xperia XZ2. The display appears as colourful as in the other smartphone and with a higher pixel density of 483 ppi. You have a 5.0-inch 1080 X 2160 pixels display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 guarding it.
Battery and CameraA reduction in the size of the smartphone translated to a corresponding decrease in the battery capacity. This is understandable as the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact now as a 2, 870mAh Li-ion battery. On the other hand, the aluminium build now cancels the wireless charging present in the other model but still has the quick charge from Qualcomm.
In the camera segment, both smartphones are the same both having a 19MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera. There’s is still the slow motion video recording at 960fps, however, the quality is upgraded from the 720p in the Samsung Galaxy S9 to 1080p. The only thing is, it does this for a shorter 3 seconds only. All the camera features present in the Sony Xperia XZ2 is present in the Compact model.
Hardware and SoftwareAnother interesting property of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is that it also features the same latest Qualcomm processor present in the bigger XZ2. Inside you have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset accompanied by an Adreno 630 GPU.
The similarity goes on, as you also have a 4GB RAM and a 64GB built-in storage and support for MicroSD card up to 400GB. This is more than enough to have an hitch free ride on the smartphone with its high grade SoC and ample memory. It will also be having Android 8.0 Oreo pre-installed from Sony alongside its UI.
Pricing and AvailabilityThe Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact was launched in the MWC 2018 and hitting the retail outlets in April. The expecting price is around £600 which is about 267, 000 naira.

It was a big surprise in the MWC 2018 looking at Sony’s new flagship which adopts a different design different from the ones Sony used to offer. Unveiled at the MWC event in Barcelona, the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 compact are the successor to last year’s Sony Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact. The Sony Xperia XZ2 now comes with a better hardware, camera and a better design. The new smartphone is what you will expect as it comes in an entirely new body.

Over the years, Sony had sticked with the bar design and in a way lacks that innovative look every year except this one. The change in design has not in anyway left any nostalgia on my own end because it is a change that had been long time due. The chunk of bezel normally on the Xperia line of smartphones have been reduced on the Sony Xperia XZ2. Although, compared to its competition like Samsung Galaxy S9, Nokia 8 Sirocco and LG V30S ThinQ the bezel is still quite large.
The Loop Surface design has paved way for a more curved build made of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 under which there is aluminium for added protection. However, the problem with this is, it easily attracts smudges and a more oleophobic coating would have done the trick. Ambient Flow is what the new design is tagged and finally it drops the 3.5mm jack like some other flagships. On the rear side the camera and the fingerprint sensor are arranged symmetrically in the middle although the fingerprint sensor is a bit far down and might be difficult to reach.
Rather than the 4K resolution display featured in its predecessor, Sony has decided to dim it down a notch by only offering a full HD HDR display. The LCD display is 5.7-inch and supports HDR viewing which is nice. The decision to reduce screen resolution has its advantages as the Sony Xperia XZ2 weighs less on the battery compared to a higher one.
Battery and CameraAs it is, the Sony Xperia XZ2 has a larger battery capacity than some of its rival flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S9. Besides it will definitely last longer with the reduced screen resolution and the better chipset. This means that the 3, 180mAh battery will last considerably longer and also supports Qi wireless charging.
There is an improved camera on the Sony Xperia XZ2 smartphone and while it has a lot of potential the features offered here could have been more in this circumstance. The major highlights includes a 4K HDR video recording, 1080p slow motion recording which is now reduced to 3s and addition of 3D facial scan to both cameras. While this is definitely cool, you still have a 19MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera on the Sony Xperia XZ2.
Hardware and SoftwareSony nails the latest chipset from Qualcomm and this will do well to boost its game in the fierce competition. Without much ado, the Sony Xperia XZ2 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with its fastest cores clocking at 2.7GHz and an Adreno 630 GPU.
In addition, you now have a 4GB RAM on it with a 64GB internal storage space. There’s support for a MicroSD card up to 400GB which is large enough for most users. Sony Xperia XZ2 also runs Android 8.0 Oreo with Sony’s own skin on top same as before.
Pricing and AvailabilityThe Sony Xperia XZ2 smartphone which was announced in the MWC 2018 will not be rolling out until April in Europe although release in other regions are yet to be confirmed. The expected price of the Sony Xperia XZ2 is around about £800 which is about 355, 000 Naira.

Nokia has just pull the curtain off its new flagship for this year and it is quite a stunner. The smartphone in question here is the Nokia 8 Sirocco which according to HMD Global is the new premium flagship for their fans that has been seeking an high-end smartphone which is capable of doing more than the Nokia 8 was able to do. The smartphone comes with an entirely different approach different from what you usually have from Nokia.

This is unlike anything you’ve seen from Nokia with its clean and classy design. The Nokia 8 Sirocco smartphone comes with a mix of stainless steel sandwiched between a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 covering. It is also quite slim having a thickness of 7.5mm with tapered edges. The steel used in the smartphone is also stronger than the aluminium used in some other flagships. However, the rear panel can be quite glossy which is common to smartphones with glass finish.
The reduced edges and the curved screen makes the Nokia 8 Sirocco more compact. Although the curvature is not as complete as that found in the Samsung Galaxy S9, this a good thing as this might get in the way sometimes during usage. This display is crisp with a resolution of 1440 X 2560 pixels on a portable 5.5-inch screen. The P-OLED panel as a pixel density measuring up to 534 ppi.
Battery and CameraHigh-end flagships like the Nokia 8 Sirocco usually don’t carry much battery capacity as it is always crammed up with features. Besides, the battery optimization on this smartphone to an extent is very efficient. HMD is going to be shipping the flagships with 3, 260mAh battery that also has a Qi wireless charging support.
Earlier HMD announced it collaboration with Zeiss-an optics expert to make the camera on this smartphone. The Nokia 8 Sirocco joins the league’s of high-end flagships with a dual camera with its 12MP rear camera and 13MP telephoto lens for 2X optical zooming. It also features the bokeh effect which gives a nice blurred background in portraits. A front facing 5MP camera is also sported on the Nokia 8 Sirocco smartphone with a bothie feature that allows you to take videos and pictures with bother front and back camera at the same time.
Hardware and SoftwareA little setback is noticed on the Nokia 8 Sirocco has HMD builds its flagship with last year’s chipset while the other flagships are already on this year chipset. Although, the Octa-core Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 processor accompanied by a Adreno 540 GPU gives a convincing performance. An up to date SoC would have been preferred.
Also, the Nokia 8 Sirocco smartphone comes with a generous 6GB internal memory alongside a 128GB built-in storage space. On a downside, it doesn’t support a memory card, however, 128GB is enough space for virtually anyone. You also have a stock Android 8.0 Oreo on the Nokia 8 Sirocco. Android One logo means the smartphone will get regular updates.
Pricing and AvailabilityThe Nokia 8 Sirocco was officially announced in the MWC 2018 and would be released in the USA this April. Nokia 8 Sirocco is also scheduled to roll out for a $922 which is about 332, 000 Naira.
