iPhone XS Specs and Price
iPhone XS

Following yesterday’s launch event in Cupertino, California at the Steve Jobs Theatre in the just completed Apple Park new iPhones was released. Among the trio of new iPhones released comes the new iPhone XS which looks very much like last year’s iPhone X. In fact, the two smartphones can not be easily distinguished from each other. The new smartphone comes with the next generation Bionic chipset, a tad bit longer battery life and improved camera among other upgrades. There’s the notch on top and the overall build is maintained with not much of a visual distinguishing factor.

iPhone XS Key Specs and Features 5.8-inch, Super Retina OLED; capacitive touchscreen 2436 x 1125 pixels (458 ppi) iOS 12 A12 Bionic Neural CPU and a 4GB RAM 64GB/128GB/245GB built-in storage, with no support for memory card Dual 12MP + 12MP rear camera and a 7MP front camera IP68 dust and water proof Qi wireless charging Face Unlock Non removable Li-ion battery (30 minutes longer than iPhone X)

iPhone XS

Design and Display

There is really not much of a difference between this smartphone and itsi predecessor. According to the naming, it suggests it is only a slight change in build style from last year’s smartphone. There is the bottom firing speaker with charging port and the other speaker in the notch to give a stereo effect. Also sitting in the notch is the camera and better sensors for a great experience. Over to.the side, there’s a a metallic frame which attract smudges and glass finish on both sides. You can now get the new smartphone in a gold finish variant which was not available for the former iPhone X and it looks amazing!

Despite the smartphone having the same display size and resolution as the iPhone X of last year. You can not help but notice the name tag of ‘Super Retina OLED display’ that it comes with. As mentioned earlier, the size remains the same at 5.8-inch which somehow strikes the balance between big and small. It also has oleophobic coating which prevents smudging and happens to be scratch resistant too.

Even if the resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels is maintained, the HDR10 and Dolby Vision is still supported but with an additional 60% boost to the dynamic ramge. There is the 3D Touch display and the True-tone display which improves the clarity of bright as well as dim visuals without driving the brightness up.

Battery and Camera

About the capacity of the battery on the iPhone XS, details was not revealed only that the smartphone will be having a longer battery life. However, you don’t get much time on the smartphsna as it only gives you 30 minutes more tham the iPhone X which has 2, 700mAh of battery juice. The reason for this is most likely to be the new chipset which is a more power efficient alternative. It will be retaining its wireless charging ability as well as quick charge even if it doesn’t come with the cable

The photography side of the flagship is as it is on the one before it, which is nothing short of splendid. Sticking with the pixel structure on the former flagship, the smartphone now has an improved picture quality thanks to the new processing system inside. At the back, you have the repetition of a dual 12MP camera arranged in the same fashion as before. The front has a 7MP Truedepth camera  which is also responsible in 3D mapping for Face ID.

Included is in-app editing which can tweak the background by changing the blur even after the shot. You get to play with features like Animoji, Memoji, optical image stabilization, 2x zoom with the telephoto lens and wide angle camera for better low light photography.

Hardware and Software

Pioneering its new Bionic chipset for this year, the smartphone is better and faster with a promised jump in performance. The new Apple Neural processor gives you one of the most powerful processing speed in the smartphone scene with top of the line graphic processing power. Performance is smooth and loading apps is snappy with no delay same as playing games.

There is a 4GB RAM on board with a storage option ramging from 64GB to 512GB, a storage option that was not available in the formal flagship. There’s the iOS 12 on the smartphone too with navigation and improved gestures.

iPhone XS Pricing and Availability

The iPhone XS will be available for pre-order on September 14 and will sell globally come September 21. The 64GB variant will be selling for about $999 (363, 000 Naira), 256GB for $1, 149 (417, 000 Naira) and the 512GB for $1, 349 (49, 000 Naira).

Asus ZenBook Pro 14 with ScreenPad is a powerful portable PC
Asus ZenBook Pro 14

The Asus ZenBook Pro 14 is a small-screen version of the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 which was released earlier this year at the Computex Taipei Expo that held in Taiwan. While Asus also announced the ZenBook Pro 14 at the event, it was never launched. However, at the recently concluded IFA 2018 tech trade show in Berlin, Asus took the veil off the ZenBook Pro 14, joining the long list of many other amazing laptops and Notebooks that were launched at the event: Lenovo’s premium 2-in-1 Knock-to-Open convertible PC for example.

Asus ZenBook Pro 14

The ZenBook Pro 14 as a member of Asus’ high-power ultra-portable ZenBook Pro family comes with some interesting modifications to its design and likewise, sports the latest Intel processor and NVIDIA graphics hardware for better performance.

Asus ZenBook Pro 14 Key Specifications Display — 14-inch LED-backlit Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 touchscreen ScreenPad — 5.5in Full HD IPS touchscreen Dimension — 296mm x 191mm x 11.9 mm Weight — 1.4 Kg Operating System — Windows 10 Pro Processor — Intel Core i7-8565U / Intel Core i5-8265U GPU — NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 1050 Max-Q Memory — 8GB / 16GB 2400MHz DDR4 Storage — 128GB / 256GB SATA III SSD or 256GB / 512GB PCIe x2 SSD or 1TB PCIe x4 SSD Ports — 1 x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C, 1 x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A, 1 x USB 2.0, 1 x Standard HDMI, 1 x Combo audio jack Body & Keyboard Design

With the lid and chassis made from finely brushed aluminum metal, the ZenBook Pro 14 sports and elegant aesthetic that sure does look good to the eyes. The Notebook is also solid and sturdy and can be used almost anywhere as it is certified to MIL-STD 810G military standard. Asus mentions that the ZenBook Pro 14 is durable and has passed extended tests for usage in extreme altitudes, humidity, temperature, and other harsh environmental condition.

Asus Zenfone Pro 14

The keyboard on the Asus ZenBook Pro 14 is backlit and ergonomically designed for comfort during usage. The keys on the backlit keyboard comes with a key travel of 1.4mm; just the right amount of key travel that allows for soft keypress and easy tapping of keys when typing. The ZenBook Pro 14 also comes with Asus’ ErgoLift hinge which helps tilts the keyboard (at 5.5 degrees) for more comfortable position during long periods of typing.

Asus ZenBook Pro 14

The ErgoLift hinge (which debuted on the Asus ZenBook S this year) is also designed to help with cooling by raising the bottom case from the surface upon which the laptop is placed.

Display

Sized at 14-inch, the display on the ZenBook Pro 14 is LED-backlit and comes with a Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) in 16:9 aspect ratio. The display is a touchscreen and comes with support for the Asus Pen stylus. One interesting detail about the ZenBook Pro 14 display is its ultra-slim bezel; coming in at 5.2mm, the screen has an 86% screen-to-body ratio and almost seem like a 13-inch laptop.

ScreenPad

Asus ZenBook Pro 14

The ScreenPad is one of the highlight (and biggest design modification) of the Asus ZenBook Pro 14. The ScreenPad is the regular mouse touchpad with a screen underneath it. Or let’s say, a screen within it.

Asus ZenBook Pro 14

Just like how Lenovo eliminated the physical keyboard and replaced it with a screen on the Lenovo Yoga Book 2, Asus also discarded the physical touchpad for a ‘screen touchpad’; called it the ScreenPad. The ScreenPad —a 5.5-inch Full HD display— is more like the second screen of the Notebook that comes with dedicated apps shortcut and allows users quickly create and edit documents on Microsoft Office apps, create shortcuts for your favorite or most used apps, control music, calendar, calculator and other dedicated ScreenPad apps.

The ScreenPad can be used like a normal touchpad and when the display is off, you can hardly tell that it actually is a full HD screen.

Processor and Storage

Based on CPU, there are two versions of the Asus ZenBook Pro 14. The bugger and more powerful version comes with Intel Core i7-8565U quad-core processor that clocks up to 4.6GHz. The second version come with a 1.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i5-processor.

In charge of graphics on the Asus ZenBook Pro 14 is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q graphics processing unit.

Whether you’re a designer, a developer or a gamer, this visual prowess means you’ll always enjoy the smoothest possible graphics performance with ZenBook Pro 14.

Storage on the ZenBook Pro 14 starts at 8GB DDR4 but can reach up to 16GB memory while the SSD is a NVMe PCI setup that can peak up to 1TB.

Asus ZenBook Pro 14

The ZenBook Pro 14 comes with a 70Wh fast charging battery (60% in 49 minutes) which Asus says can last up to 13 hours, but will barely supply up to 10 hours with the ScreenPad’s display powered up — which is still decent enough.

Other features of the Asus ZenBook Pro 14 include IR Camera for fast login using facial recognition and support for dual virtual assistant: Windows Cortana and Amazon Alexa.

Lenovo ThinkPad L380: Portable PC at its cheapest
Lenovo ThinkPad L380 1

The Lenovo ThinkPad L380 is Lenovo’s latest offering from its ‘ThinkPad L’ line of laptops. Targeted at professionals and students, the ThinkPad L380 magically manages to combine features found on more premium laptops at an affordable price. The Thinkpad L380 is a semi-convertible PC and it is more of an upgrade to the Lenovo ThinkPad 13 that was released more than a year ago.

Lenovo ThinkPad L380

The highlights of the L380 are its durable (though basic) design, solid performance, impressive battery life, and affordability. The laptop ‘steals’ almost all the basic features of the Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga except for convertibility. Again, with the ThinkPad L380, what Lenovo is offering is a premium business laptop for professionals and students at an affordable price.

Levono ThinkPad L380 Key Specifications Dimension — 12.67 inches x 8.83 inches x 0.74 inches (321.8 mm x 224.2 mm x 18.8 mm) Display — 13.3-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080 resolution) IPS screen Weight — 3.22 pounds (1.46 kg) Operating System — Windows 10 Pro Processor — 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U Graphics — Intel UHD Graphics 620 RAM — 4GB / 8GB DDR4 Storage — 256GB / 512GB SATA M.2 (Samsung PM871b) Camera — Front-facing 720p Speakers — Dual 2 watt Biometrics — Fingerprint reader Battery — 45Wh (USB-C charger) Wireless — Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 (2 x 2), Bluetooth 4.1

Lenovo ThinkPad L380

The ThinkPad L380 has a basic but sturdy body build. The lid is made out is made out of aluminum while the bottom part is covered in glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP). The laptop comes with dual metal hinges that hold the display firmly that it won’t get to shake around during usage; even when in motion. About the display, it is 13.3-inch full HD (FHD) IPS anti-glare screen with 1,920 x 1,080 resolution. A downside to the display, though, is brightness and colour reproduction. Brightness level is barely up to 250nits and might leave you wishing your screen was brighter when used in properly lit room or in sunlight.

Lenovo ThinkPad L380 1

The display isn’t the best you’d find on a portable laptop in the Thinkpad L380 class but it does perform averagely and decently well. Back to the laptop’s hinge design, unlike the Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga which is convertible, it only allows the lid fold back flat on the same level as the bottom case; the top lip cannot fold to the back into a tablet.

Lenovo Thinkpad L380

The dual hinges allow the lid to fold back flat (no convertible function here), and you get a sturdy display that won’t shake around too much if you’re using the laptop while in a moving vehicle or train. It’s available in black and silver colors.

Lenovo ThinkPad L380

The keys on the L380’s keyboard are comfortable and perfectly sized to allow for easy typing and writing. There is a “Fn lock” (and some other special keys) that allows users choose the primary/secondary function of the Fn keys. Though the keyboard is not backlit, there is a vacancy of the ThinkPad L380 that comes with keyboard illumination. The three touchpad keys and TrackPoint native to ThinkPad laptops are also present on the Lenovo ThinkPad L380 for easy and numerous navigation options.

To the right side of the touchpad is a fingerprint scanner for improved security on the ThinkPad L380. The scanner reads your fingerprint and logs you in quicker than password would. It is even more secure than passwords and passcodes are. The position of the fingerprint reader makes it look like it might get rubbed by the palm and wrist a lot when typing. I, however, doubt that that would be the case as the fingerprint reader’s positioning is strategic enough to avoid such occurrence.

Lenovo ThinkPad L380

Another feature that positions the Lenovo ThinkPad L380 as a perfect business PC is the number of ports it comes with; there are at least 4 ports on each side. To the left: two USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C (one for power connection/charging), one USB 3.0 Type-A, and one HDMI port. To the right: Kensington lock, one mini-Ethernet port, one USB 3.0 Type-A, mini SD card slot, headphone jack, and power button.

The ThinkPad L380 comes with 8th-generation Intel Core i5-8250U CPU alongside 8GB of RAM (expandable to 32GB) and 256GB of built-in SSD storage. WindowsCentral reports that the processor performs averagely as it sports a single-core GeekBench score of 3,945 and multi-core score of 9,775. The operating system is the Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Edition.

The 8GB DDR4 and 256 SSD model has a web price of $999 but sells for about $200 lesser on Lenovo’s official store. There is also a bigger variant with the same 8GB RAM but 512GB of storage which sells for $1200. Users on even very low budget can also opt for the Lenovo ThinkPad L380 version with 4GB RAM and 128GB of storage for $520.

The ThinkPad L380 is a semi-convertible work PC which comes with specs that perfectly resonates what the ThinkPad line of Lenovo’s laptops stand for — durability and performance. Perfect for students and professionals, it also comes at a respectfully affordable price that won’t a dent in ones pocket. The display isn’t the best you’d get out there but its quality is decent enough. The infrared camera and fingerprint reader (which stores prints on the chip) also ups the security of the device. Overall, it’s a good price for money.
