Following the success of the 2018 edition of VivaTech, the international innovation event that brings together more than 8,000 startups from all over the world, SANOFI will once again be present in Paris in 2019 through Afric@Tech – its dedicated lab that is committed to innovative African startups.
On this occasion, SANOFI is launching 3 challenges, which are part of its commitment to support and encourage innovation on the African continent.
CHALENGE 1How to improve the awareness & diagnosis of patients suffering from diabetes?
CHALENGE 2How to improve access to medicines in remote areas from supply chain management to alternative payment solutions?
CHALENGE 3How to support decision-makers in getting better usage of available health data?
Our goal is to create a health ecosystem in the service of the patient that includes all stakeholders in the sector: public authorities, private companies, startups, etc.
SANOFI now invites startups in Africa to submit their solutions towards these challenges. This call for projects is free and open to all. Registration and submission of application can be done online by visiting the information and registration platform:

Application is open till February 15, 2019
A jury of professionals will select qualifying startups in February. Startups will be evaluated according to 5 criteria: concrete evidence of positive results in at least one African country, project maturity, relevance of the solution, market potential and business model, skills, expertise and experience of the team and finally scientific evidence if applicable.
Selected start-ups will be invited to present their solutions at Afric@Tech in Paris on 16-18 May, 2019 where they will defend their projects before a jury comprising of SANOFI representatives and industry professionals. They will be required to demonstrate their solutions to the VivaTech public.

A toilet is one of the most common things found in every home. If you have the privilege of living in a modern society, you can’t imagine life without it.
Although an average human spends about 90 days sitting on the toilet seat over the course of a lifetime, most of us take them for granted because they have become a part of our daily routine.
The basic functions of how the toilet works haven’t changed much since the day the first toilet with flushing system was invented.
There’s a bowl that’s made of ceramic, a plastic tank that holds water, a flush valve that releases the water into the bowl as soon as you press on the flush button, and a seat that’s usually made of wood or plastic.
There’s no rocket science behind it, and manufacturers haven’t found much areas for improvement in the past few decades.
However, this is about to change drastically.
The revolution of technology has been improving many aspects of our lives for decades, and it was just a matter of time before it started to find its way into the toilet market. Although still very expensive and not as popular as they will be, the new generation of high-end toilets offers a sneak peek of what will become standard for everyone in the near future.
Here’s a list of a few of the most interesting features that are already incorporated in some high-end toilets and will most likely find their way into every home in a matter of years.
Automatic FeaturesSome would argue that technology has made us lazy. For instance, back in the day, we used to preplan every shopping trip and drive miles to find what we were looking for; however, today, we can order just about anything online and have it delivered in front of our doorstep.
Today’s high-end toilets come with plenty of automatic features that will make us even lazier.
Are you having trouble crouching over to lift the toilet lid? The best toilets come equipped with sensors that lift the lid up automatically when you approach the toilet to a few feet of distance.
Do you feel that the two-second period spent for pressing on the flush button is more than you can handle? Today’s best toilets do the job for you automatically.
What about turning the light on and off every time you enter or leave the bathroom? Some toilets already come equipped with LED lights that will turn on as soon as you approach the toilet.
While most of the automatic features seem unnecessary, they have a few benefits that are impossible to overlook. The area around the toilet is full of bacteria and germs, and if the toilet does most of the job for you automatically, there will be less chance of picking up the germs and spreading them around the house.
Electronic Bidet
The first high-tech feature that could drastically change the way we use the toilet is electronic bidet. Now, to be fair, this is nothing new because electronic bidets are very widespread in Japan and some other parts of Asia, but it seems that they are slowly gaining popularity in Europe and the United States.
Electronic bidet is a nozzle that’s attached to the toilet (usually the toilet seat) and is there to replace the toilet paper by cleaning the private parts automatically by itself. While this is nothing new in Japan, the technology behind it has seen some drastic improvements in recent years.
For instance, one of the most popular electronic bidets is the Washlet, which is manufactured by the world’s largest toilet manufacturer known as TOTO. It allows users to adjust the pressure and temperature of the water coming from the nozzle, and even the temperature of the air that’s coming out of the nozzle to dry the private parts.
Most people don’t realize it, but toilet paper is a single-use paper product. It can’t be recycled, which means that it’s bad for the environment. If we want to save the environment on the long run, using electronic bidets might be a great place to start.
Heated Seat
Did you ever find the toilet seat too cold in the winter? Today’s new generation of high-tech toilets features toilet seats that heat themselves automatically to the temperature chosen by users. Most toilets with heated seat come with some kind of control panel or a remote controller which can be used to set up the desired seat temperature.
Some toilets go even further by allowing multiple users to choose the desired temperature. Once the user sits on the toilet, the toilet adjusts the temperature of the seat according to the user’s weight.
What’s Next?The new breed of modern toilets with an advanced technology promises drastic changes in the future. It’s just a matter of time before toilets become equipped with wireless technology and all of the high-tech stuff we can only find in smartphones and computers right now.
